Yep, 34 weeks today! That tips us over into the she’ll-be-coming-home-soon side of this process.
And, because our child can’t help being a bit perverse, she managed to outgrow her bone marrow. Olivia Moonpie has packed on 8 ounces in about 72 hours and her red blood cell production didn’t keep pace. She started acting lethargic and having trouble keeping her O2 saturation up, particularly while trying to take a bottle. She got a blood transfusion yesterday to counteract her anemia and by last night was back to her lovely pink cheeked feisty self.
Holding your not quite five pound infant, watching blood run through the iv tubing into her hand and seeing her skin go from pale ivory to lovely, warm pink and having her start to wiggle around after lying so still….
To that special group of people who donate blood specifically for premature infants, thank you for putting the roses back in her chubby cheeks when she needs it. Shannon has already started the process to become a donor himself.
