Not the dermatitis from the steri-strips. That still itches, but it’s getting better. No, this is new and I’d love to hear opinions while I wait for my post partum check on Wednesday.
At first, I thought it was just a heat rash. It’s June in Texas. I’ve been sitting holding a VERY warm infant for long stretches of time. Heat rash fit. Until it spread.
I have red, itchy, bumpy patches under my left breast, on my left hip, on my left thigh, on my neck, behind my left knee and on my stomach. It itches like poison ivy. I’ve tried an antihistamine cream and caladryl which don’t seem to have had much effect. I’m reluctant to try an oral antihistamine since I’m still working to build my breastmilk supply. Ice packs help until the feeling returns, then it’s itchy again.
I haven’t changed detergents, bath soaps/shampoos, eaten anything new, worn new clothes, or been exposed to any strange plants or animals. The only new things are: surgery, delivery, pumping, NICU.
It started yesterday as two small patches and has since spread.
I kept myself home from tonight’s NICU visit because I don’t want to risk that this is something other than an allergy. I’d rather not miss tomorrow’s visit. I miss enough of Olivia Moonpie’s day as it is. Any thoughts while I’m killing time waiting to see the doctor?
On a different note, thanks for the supply tips! I’d already been eating oatmeal (Sorry Tash, I can’t stand dark beer. I’ll double up on the irish oatmeal to make up for it. If only they’d discover than a nice mojito did the trick…. I AM going to try the olive oil trick since those stupid things adhere to my skin by the end of a session and I’m already using the big flanges). I bought some fenugreek to try since the store I was in didn’t carry the Mother’s Milk Blend. My supply has been steadily increasing every day so I was never terribly worried. I got a slow start but I don’t think it will take me long to get caught up. If I could just stop scratching….
Update: The patch under my breast is looking different from what is on my hip/leg/stomach. I’m thinking that one IS a heat rash and spending as much time exposing that skin to the air as I can. The rest of it is just very strange. The caladryl does seem to be helping now after several applications. It starts with the itching. If I scratch, the redness and bumps start and then it stays like that for about 24 hours or so (I’m basing this on the patch on the top of my thigh which may have been where it all started and is now much less itchy and red). After a couple of comments suggesting shingles, I hit google to look into it. I think I can safely rule that out. The rash doesn’t act like it, the bumps aren’t fluid filled, and I don’t have any of the fever/flu-ish symptoms that go along with it. Whew!
