Ok, so I live in North Texas. To say we have hard tap water would be a mild understatement.
I’m planning on using cloth diapers.
I have a front loading washing machine.
I need to find something with which to wash said diapers.
Now, for our regular laundry I have used, with great success, soap nuts, and biokleen (which I love). I hang up almost all of our clothes unless it’s one of those weeks when it rains for days and I’m desperate. I’ve noticed no trouble with a loss of absorbancy in our bath or dish towels and I have some that are over 10 years old. I rarely use bleach or fabric softener (and that’s only in the winter when the static is so freakin’ bad). If clothes are badly soiled or smell, I use white vinegar or a little borax and that usually does the trick.
Hopefully, that gives you an idea of how laundry goes in our house.
Now, what I need to know is what I should change before we start washing diapers? We have been using a brand name detergent lately just because it was easier for Shannon to get now that he’s taking care of all of the shopping and chores. It isn’t one recommended for diapers and I will run a few loads with the new diaper-safe one before washing any of them to help clear it out. I’m most concerned about the hard water since on the diaper sites I’ve looked at, that seems to be the big enemy.
1. Anyone had success with soap nuts in hard water/HE machines with diapers?
2. What laundry soaps did you love in hard water/HE machines?
3. Which ones did you not love?
4. Anything else I need to know now, before I get started? I’m so not into the whole trial and error laundry process with dirty diapers!
