I just reported our neighbors for neglecting their dog. Why would you get a dog, just to keep it on a chain in the furthest corner of your yard? What’s the point? Here’s this sweet chocolate lab mix, on a chain that can’t be more than about 8 feet long, trapped between a privacy fence and a stone wall. No one plays with him. I’ve never seen him go for a walk. He has no toys that I can spot as I peek through the fence. His water/food bowl are too small and lightweight, so he tips them over. The past three days it has been empty. All through the night, he barks this pitiful bark that you know is just him hoping his pack will come for him. He cries too.
This morning, I heard him crying, so I got a little bolder and climbed up to look over the privacy fence into their backyard. His chain was wrapped around a utility post, so he can’t move. And the combo food/water bowl? Bone dry and way out of his reach. I managed to get him to circle around and untangle himself…this time.
I don’t know my neighbors. I don’t really want to. I don’t take kindly to people who buy animals then ignore them and I do have to live next to them for a little while longer. Since I can almost touch their house if I lean out the guest bedroom window, it is a smarter move to work anonymously through the police department, even though it kills me to wait. Thanks to a particularly lenient castle law here that makes it ok to shoot first and ask questions later, I’m not going to risk going into their backyard. I am going to figure out a way to get him some water under the fence. I don’t have any dogfood, but I have some bread and peanut butter. Not perfect but it will hold him until the animal control people get here.
I’m going to go hug my sweet kitties now and then make doggie sandwiches while I think of all sorts of bad names to call my neighbors.
Good for you! Reading about that dog makes me so mad and so sad. That doggie is lucky to have you as a neighbor. I hope it’ll get a new home soon.
This makes me so sad. That poor dog. Our own recently departed kitty was a stray- and I can’t believe anyone would abandon such a sweet, loving kitty. Argh.
wish i could have him….brings tears to my eyes….what lets people do that ….help us….
Thank you for being so kind…the world needs more people like you!
This breaks my heart. I don’t understand why someone would bother getting a dog if they couldn’t take care of it. I’m glad you are reporting it to the authorities.
Ugh! I hate that! Good for you for reporting and making the sammishes. Poor puppy 😦
Oh my gosh… this makes me soooooooooooooooo angry. Animals are helpless and I have NO IDEA why people would treat them that way… This enrages me. Thanks for being a nice neighbor. I sure hope it gets rescued!
I hate people like that. And I am not using the word lightly.
awful. you are a good neighbor. dogs love pnut butter too.
2 wks after my poor pup died too young, I saw a dog locked in a car one morning, and he was still in there 9 hrs later, after work, with the window barely cracked in the heat. I called to report the driver and found myself bawling saying the same thing, I just don’t see how people can treat their pets that way.
Terrible! Why get a dog if you are going to treat it like that? I try to tell my dogs as they lounge on the sofa in the sun that not all dogs have it as good as them. Our new neighbor has a dog in their backyard that cries every time we go out there. I’m going to get brave and check for a way to see in their yard to make sure it has food and water. I can’t bear to hear it cry. Kudos to you for boldly calling the authorities.
