I really appreciate all of the support yesterday. Like I said, the lay-offs weren’t really a surprise. When we got the email three months ago telling us that moving forward, all office supplies would be ordered, stocked, and distributed by a single person, rather than by each department, I knew we were in trouble. When they start controlling access to the paper clips, start polishing your interviewing skills. Trust me. This is not my first rodeo.
Still, while we knew we were walking the tightrope, it seemed that we would pull through. It would be tough and we were going to have to take on some extra duties with no extra pay, there were no raises this year, etc. So getting the phone call from the boss that started with, “To lessen the blow I’ll tell you that Friday is my last day…” and ended with, “…so be sure to send him your resume because I’ve told him a great deal about you and what you can do.” was still shocking. But, Shannon and I have weathered worse financial situations and have been extremely good about making sure we have a deep cushion and a low debt profile. I’ve already had several leads. We need to make some decisions about moving, whether to do it sooner rather than later and, of course, we’re now far enough into the FET to be completely committed. The outcome of that will have to be fitted into the equation as well. That equation has moved out of the realm of algebra and is now looking like something from advanced calculus.
Yesterday was the day to be sad. Today is the day to be angry. Tomorrow is the day to start making plans and taking action. I only have the strength to dwell on one life tragedy long term and that slot is already full.
And worst case scenario? Well, it won’t be the first holiday season I’ve worked retail or more than one job. What’s that incredibly old joke about us liberal arts majors? We have degrees in saying, “Want fries with that?”
Now do me a favor. If you haven’t already, go and freakin’ vote!!! This economy isn’t going to fix itself. Oh, and would you mind if I sent you a copy of my resume… 😉
