When she asked me to participate, my first instinct was to say no. In fact, this is how I responded to her.
“Does it give away too much insight into my personality if I tell you my initial reaction was, “There’s no way I could do that! Why would she ask me? There are so many good writers out there.” But, I’m trying to be all about the pushing myself beyond my comfort zone these days. I’m afraid of grief turning me inwards too much, coating me with thick layers of protection and self-preservation until I can’t move. And that’s just not who I want to be. ”
You see, Melissa of Stirrup Queens has announced her newest project. Bridges is about trying to push beyond your comfort zone and gain some insight into someone else’s life. It’s sort of a written walk-a-mile-in-someone-else’s-shoes thing. As Mel wrote, “We are a consortium of compassionate bloggers who are looking to use writing to educate, tell a story, bring awareness, and build community.”
So, I’m unbelievably proud to accept the role as contributing editor for Neonatal Loss. I have spent the past six months looking for ways to ensure that Lennox and Zoë make an impact on this world that continues beyond the far too short span of their lives and it is because of them that I’m pushing myself out of my comfort zone. I don’t know if my words will make a difference, but all I can do is try. I invite you all to join us in building these bridges.
If you have a post on neonatal loss that you would like to submit for Bridges, please email me at ourowncreation at gmail dot com with the url of your blog and the name of the post. If you are interested in being a contributing editor, visit this page to see what categories are open and to contact Mel. There is also an “awareness blogroll” being put together.
