I did something last night that I haven’t done in a long time. I surprised S. As is normal for a thursday night, he was at his Japanese class. I’m not sure what got into me, but I needed to do something different. After work, I rushed to the grocery store to buy fresh broccoli, chicken breasts, wine, and chocolate cake (ok, mix but you have to cut me some slack…it was thursday night. Who bakes a cake from scratch on thursday night?). I hurried home, mixed up the cake and put it in the oven. Then, I cleaned the kitchen. S sometimes claims that I don’t know how to clean the kitchen. That isn’t true. I HATE to clean the kitchen and will go as long as I possibly can without doing it. But last night, I unloaded the dishwasher, reloaded the dishwasher, ran the dishwasher, washed the dishes that wouldn’t fit in the dishwasher, put away all the pantry items from this week’s Costco trip, and wiped down the counters. By then, the cake was done. So, I set the table with a table cloth, white cloth napkins, wine glasses, and candles. We never eat at the table unless we have company (or S’s son who needs as much practice with table manners as possible). I think S and I have had two meals together, alone at the table. Once I set the table, I mixed a goat cheese and spinach filling for the chicken, diced potatoes and seasoned them with garlic, lemon peel, and olive oil, rinced and cut the broccoli for steaming. While the chicken and the potatoes started roasting, I took a long, hot, bubbly bath with wonderful pepperminty soap and shampoo. Then, I put on a dress. I know, shocking! I wasn’t even going to a wedding! When S got home, I met him at the door and led him to our date.
Dinner, at the table, with no television. Lit by two candles. Drinking wine. Talking. Listening.
I can’t wait to do it again sometime.
