I know, I’m a bad blogger. I just don’t seem to have much to say these days without symptoms to report on, or appointments to rehash. I did warn you all. Most of my energy is going to dealing with a return of the metformin side effects.
Because my RE prefers the regular metformin over the time release, I’m back on the three-a-day, 500mg pills instead of the time release. I’d asked to switch to the Met ER before because the side effects AND the issues with all the hormones was more than I could stand. Since I’m not on anything else, and we didn’t get pregnant on the ER, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to give the regular metformin a try. She prefers it, I’m paying her for her expertise, and I’d hate myself if I thought I hadn’t done EVERYTHING I possibly could to make the IVF work. Thanks to a screw up somewhere with the first prescription, in which I only got 10 days worth and my insurance will only pay for a refill every 30 days even though I didn’t get 30 days worth of pills, there was a met-free period that was apparently long enough to require me to suffer through the early side effects all over again. Imagine going through all the digestive agony that results from eating lots of greasy, spicy food without the fun of eating lots of greasy, spicy food. S keeps asking me to describe what I’m feeling, which is hard, but because I get hits from people searching for metformin information, I’ll do my best. Imagine a bad case of heartburn. Now, move that sensation down from the middle of your chest to somewhere behind your belly button. Throw in some mild queasiness. Not enough to where you start thinking that throwing up might be, in the long run, the better route to take, just enough to let you know that sudden movement would be a baaaad idea. Mix that with gas and that awful, instantaneous, acidy diarrhea that makes you speed walk, butt clenched, to the nearest restroom (Is that TMI? I’ve lost all perspective on that in recent months!). I’ve tried cutting back on the simple carbs (you’ll have to pry my Kashi TLC Pumpkin Spice granola bars out of my cold, dead hand) and fats, although I’ve noticed that after a richer meal, I feel better the longest. I’ve tried taking the met with food, before food, after food, with milk, with water, with yogurt. Yesterday, after making the decision that lying curled up on the floor of my office wasn’t the most professional behavior, I went home at noon. If anyone has tricks, let me know.
